Nothing was left that could be traded,<\/p>\n

so you uselessly wonder when your limp<\/p>\n

first appeared and your eyesight blurred, as<\/p>\n

if identifying a moment could\u2019ve meant<\/p>\n

a never ending summer.<\/p>\n

Who needs unquenchable thirst?<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

But here you are, heart beating, lungs breathing<\/p>\n

moving slow and nearly blind, able to afford nothing<\/p>\n

but today, tomorrow only a hopeful maybe.<\/p>\n

What you really want cannot be sold.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Those pagan temples \u2013 and their<\/p>\n

statues of false gods \u2013 fell<\/p>\n

around your face and shoulders,<\/p>\n

the world you\u2019ve known imploded.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

All the doves and goats sacrificed, all<\/p>\n

that incense burned, all those murmured prayers,<\/p>\n

so confident in what was true \u2013 like a roulette wheel table faith<\/p>\n

after the decision between the red and the black<\/p>\n

was made \u2013 but why does the hope that<\/p>\n

preceded still feel more fresh<\/p>\n

than the disappointment that followed?<\/p>\n
